Research Associate

Job Description:
Product Knowledge is seeking a mechanically minded Research Associate to augment our team as we build winning strategies for products supporting our Nation’s warfighters.  Our clients range from Fortune 500 firms to small startups, all with a singular focus of enabling the effectiveness of our military with the best equipment in the world.  The successful candidate will provide research support and analysis to our senior team while engaging directly with our clientele and their Department of Defense customers.  They will become familiar with the DoD Joint Capability Integration and Development System; the DoD Planning, Programming, Budgeting and Execution process; the Congressional Authorization and Appropriation Processes as well as other aspects related to deploying emerging capabilities to the force.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Research supporting client projects with emphasis on DoD capability gaps, DoD budgetary and DoD policy issues;
  • Identification and deconstruction of key attributes within emerging capabilities and the correlation of these attributes to DoD capability gaps and requirements;
  • Development and management of complex programs, assessment of customer requirements, identification of dependencies, and manage and mitigate risks;
  • Proactive development of innovative ideas supporting our client’s interests and communicating them to the Product Knowledge team and partners;
  • Identification of issues, delineating obstacles, and developing options to address them in order to achieve a satisfactory outcome;
  • Identification of emerging trends, as well as assessing the influence of these trends on the effectiveness of our client’s programs;
  • Drafting reports to clients related to the status of ongoing activities;
  • Management of Social Media.

Desired Skills:

  • Demonstrable experience analyzing the DoD budget justification documents;
  • Familiarity with the structure of the US DoD with emphasis on the acquisition and doctrine organizations;
  • Understanding of the Defense Appropriations and National Defense Authorization processes and the impact these have on the adoption or acquisition of capabilities for the DoD.

  • Ability to collaborate and communicate across all levels; build relationships, discussions of controversial issues and to summarize varying viewpoints to reach consensus;
  • Ability to conceptualize, organize, and draw inferences from incomplete data and present a compelling analysis of findings and issues while identifying, articulating, documenting, and mitigating knowledge gaps;
  • Demonstrated abilities in research and analysis, written and oral communications and presentations, and document management;
  • Ability to summarize the results of a study and produce a written report to support decision making;
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal and teamwork skills, plus independent problem-solving ability;
  • Ability to manage logistics, planning, and note-taking, and summarize the results of meetings or conferences of the Product Knowledge team, our partners, our clients and the government customers;
  • Ability to balance responsibilities among assigned activities, including the ability to manage transitions effectively from task to task, and adaptability to varying customer needs;
  • Demonstrated high-level of expertise in the use of business processes and Microsoft Office Products (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook).

Mandatory Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in social, political, physical, natural or business sciences; humanities; engineering or mathematics; or other fields directly relating to strategic planning and evaluation;
  • US Citizen or US Person as defined under 22 U.S. Code § 6010;
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Job Location:

  • This position is work from home ~60%, client site/DoD facility (DC area) ~30%, travel<10%

Salary Range:

  • $45,000 - $55,000 + stipends
